After a successful stint at the Paris Games, the Paralympic Committee of India (PCI) has announced the flag bearers for the closing ceremony that takes place on Sunday (Sep 8). Gold medal-winning archer Harvinder Singh and twice-medal winner Preeti Pal will lead the Indian contingent in the closing ceremony that will take place on Sunday in the French capital. While there are still 48 hours for the Games to come to a close, India has already achieved its best-ever performance at a Para Games winning 26 medals, which also includes a record six gold medals.
With less than 48 hours to go for the Games to close, the PCI announced the star para-athletes to be India’s flag bearers. Preeti has been the star of the show for Indian para-athletes with the 23-year-old winning two bronze medals in Paris. She won bronze in Women’s 100 m T35 followed by another bronze in the Women’s 200 m T35. She remains the only Indian para-athlete to have won multiple medals at the Paris Games.
On the other hand, Harvinder Singh became the first Indian to win a medal in Paralympic archery after he won a bronze medal in the men’s recurve event. He had won a bronze medal at the Tokyo Paralympics and followed that with a gold medal in Paris.
India’s successful Para Games
With the addition of two more gold medals and a silver on late Wednesday, India had already registered its best Para performance in a single edition. However, Praveen Kumar’s gold medal on Friday means India has now outright registered its best performance having surpassed the five-gold medal tally from the Tokyo Games. At the time of writing, India has six gold, nine silver and 11 bronze medals. The total of 26 medals is also India’s best run at a single Paralympic Games.
